JUST DON'T TOUCH ME, AMIGO

August 31, 2009

It’s been said of the fringe festival, that you often have as good a chance of seeing something really remarkable, as something fairly bad. Keeping this in mind, I attended Fernando Gambaroni’s one man show Thursday night,"Just Don’t Touch Me, Amigo," and was pleasantly surprised to find it fell firmly into the former category.

Mr. Gambaroni wins us over immediately with his eccentric nervousness. He is awkwardly endearing, an Argentinian version of Mr. Bean (with vocal chords, an important distinction.) He uses his foreignness as the main conduit for his particular brand of comedy, drawing from clichés and stereotypes to poke fun at Americans and their various neuroses.

He plays a variety of different characters during the show; the demure woman from Kansas, the pretentious cool-guy blind date, the arrogant interviewer. He manages to capture all of them in a wonderfully humorous and believable light. It feels eerily like we’ve met these people before, most likely we have.

What really sets this show apart from others, however, is that through the comedy and the jokes, there emerges a very poignant commentary on ethnicity and identity. Although we are laughing, sometimes we are also feeling the very real hurt of being an outsider. We experience through Mr. Gambaroni’s eyes the frustrations of being pigeonholed into a certain identity because of one’s background. This is comedy at its best; it manages to be both a meaningful social commentary as well as lighthearted farce, with neither aspect retracting from the other.
